On 14 February 2023 MusiQuE organised the webinar on the topic ‘Quality enhancement at pre-college level’ initiated by Mattias Lundqvist from the Barratt Due Institute of Music (Oslo, Norway) for the members of the Young Music Talents in Europe. YMTE is an organisation for pre-college music schools throughout Europe supporting young talents and working towards highlighting the importance of this sector in the music education system. The MusiQuE webinar presented perspectives on the benefits and challenges of quality enhancement reviews of pre-college music institutions and programmes.
The speakers included:
- Annick van Gennip (Head of department at the School for Young Talent at Royal Conservatoire of The Hague),
- Christoph Brenner (General Director at Conservatorio della Svizzera Italiana in Lugano)
- Linda Messas (MusiQuE Director).
The webinar was moderated by Michaela Hahn (MusiQuE Board member, EMU representative and Senior Lecturer at Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien)
Annick van Gennip from the Royal Conservatoire of The Hague and Christoph Brenner from Conservatorio della Svizzera Italiana shared their experiences as reviewed institutions at pre-college level on how to involve different voices in the self-evaluation phase or how to implement recommendations resulting from the procedure at their institutions, among others.
In the second part of the webinar, MusiQuE representative Linda Messas explained how MusiQuE quality enhancement procedures at pre-college level originated and described this type of procedure in more detail. This included a brief introduction to the MusiQuE standards for pre-college music education.
The webinar concluded with an open discussion in which members of the audience shared their thoughts on pre-college review procedures, making reference to national initiatives for recognition as well as challenges faced by institutions in quality enhancement at this level in comparison to higher education.
